Drug category: antibiotics - therapy must cover all likely pathogens in the context of the clinical setting, for example, dyazide. The results of this study demonstrate that the BIS may be a valid monitor of depth of conscious and deep sedation in the spontaneously breathing child. BIS scores correlated significantly with their paired UMSS scores. In this series, the BIS was also valid in a small group of infants aged less than six months. We believe that these results are important because the BIS has several potential advantages over observational scoring systems. It is objective and easy to use. Unlike observational scales, assessment does not need to be interrupted during procedures to avoid patient movement because the BIS requires no verbal interaction or physical stimulus to the patient that may disrupt the procedure. Inter-observer variability is not an issue. If our results are confirmed by other studies, the BIS could become a useful monitor during sedation of children, not only to measure depth of sedation, but also to guide dosing of sedation drugs. Divestments 1998 On September 30, 1998 Roland SA, Murten, Switzerland on November 10, 1998 Redline Healthcare Inc., USA and on December 30, 1998 certain business lines of Novartis Nutrition S.r.l., Bologna, Italy, were sold. Total sales of Roland and Redline activities recorded up to their respective date of divestment amounted to CHF 499 million. The Italian divested activities were consolidated for the whole year and made sales of CHF 186 million in 1998. The sale price for these divestments totalled CHF 490 million. Agribusiness Effective April 30, 1998, SDS Biotech K.K., Tokyo, Japan was divested. Sales in the period up to divestment were CHF 59 million. Divestments 1997 Industry On March 13, 1997 Ciba Specialty Chemicals Holding Inc., and its subsidiaries Ciba SC ; was spun off completely to existing Novartis Shareholders via a Rights Offering. The spin-off was effective as of January 1, 1997. The equity transferred to Novartis Shareholders has been deducted from the Novartis consolidated equity at January 1, 1997. The exclusion of the operating results of CIBA SC for the period January 1, 1997 to March 13, 1997 did not have a material impact on the Group's net income, for instance, moduretic. The sums do not always add to 97 because of missing data. Results The average age of the participants was 66.2 years SD 8.84, range 5087 ; , and 74 76.3% ; were male. Eighty-two 84.6 % ; had at least a high school education, and 43 44.3% ; were non-White. Seventy-six had comprehensive insurance coverage Medicare with supplement, private insurance, or veterans' health benefits ; , but the remaining 21 had limitations to their healthcare coverage with the potential for high out-of-pocket costs. Stroke survivors experienced an average of 2.38 stroke-related comorbidities SD 0.85, range 06 ; . The three leading stroke-related comorbidities in this study were hypertension n 82, 86.5% history of cardiac related comorbidities including arrhythmias, faulty heart valves, and coronary artery disease n 62, 64.6% and diabetes n 37, 38.5% ; . On average, patients experienced 3.9 complications SD 3.18, range 013 ; with the most common being depression n 43, 44.8% ; . Stroke survivors were discharged home with an average of 11.3 medications SD 4.94, range 327 ; per person from 5.4 different drug classifications SD 2.07, range 112 ; . The number of medications prescribed was correlated with the number of strokerelated comorbidities r 0.214, p .04 ; . Receiving prescriptions for medications from several different drug classifications was correlated with having more stroke-related comorbidities r 0.203, p .05 ; and more complications r 0.229, p .03 ; . There were no correlations between the number of medications or the number of drug classifications and age, gender, education, socioeconomic status SES ; , or the number of days in rehabilitation. The most common classifications of medications, with an example of one commonly prescribed medication in each classification, is shown in Table 1. The medication prescriptions were consistent with the stroke-related comorbidities and medical complications identified in the charts. Eighty of the 83 96.4% ; stroke survivors with a diagnosis of hypertension were discharged on antihypertensive medications. Antidiabetic medications were prescribed for 86.5% of those with a diagnosis of diabetes and nine additional stroke survivors who had hyperglycemia. Of the 43 patients with a diagnosis of after stroke depression, 38 88.4% ; were discharged on antidepressant medications. In addition, 23 patients without a recorded diagnosis of depression were discharged with a prescription for an antidepressant; 61 of the 97 stroke survivors 63.5% ; were discharged with prescription for antidepressant medications. Other common complications which were reflected in the medication prescriptions were and ocuflox, for example, moduretic medication.
Synopsis GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals has won European approval for FendrixTM, a hepatitis B vaccine that is claimed to provide better protection than current vaccines due to a novel adjuvant used in the formulation. The new vaccine is a high-potency follow-up to GSK Bio's Engerix-BTM hepatitis B vaccine. According to Pharmatimes, Engerix-B has been on the market for 15 years and has already been administered to over a billion people. However, certain groups such as pre-haemodialysis and haemodialysis patients do not get a very strong response with this product because their renal problems mean their immunity is typically lower than in healthy individuals. For this reason, GSK developed a new version, using the same HBV antigen used in its other vaccines as well as AS04, a proprietary GSK adjuvant. The resulting vaccine Fendrix has an increased immune potency, allowing two dose administration rather than three.

This study is being done to find out if 6 treatments of one combination of chemotherapy drugs 5-Fluoruracil, Epirubicin and Cyclophosphamide FEC ; is better than four cycles of Adriamycin and Cyclophosphamide AC ; in treating node-negative breast cancer. FEC chemotherapy has been studies in women with breast cancer and positive lymph nodes. FEC has not been evaluated for women with breast cancer and negative lymph nodes.

This document represents the efforts of the Community Health Group CHG ; Pharmacy and Therapeutics P&T ; Committee to provide physicians and pharmacists with a method to begin to evaluate the various drug products available. The medical treatment of patients is frequently relative to the practical application of drug therapy. Due to the vast availability of medication therapy and treatment modalities, a reasonable program of drug product selection and drug usage must be developed. The goal of the CHG's Healthy Families Drug Formulary is to enhance the physician's and pharmacist's abilities to provide optimal cost effective drug therapy for patients. The development, maintenance, and improvement of this process are evolutionary and require constant attention. This is accomplished by the CHG P&T Committee, which is comprised of plan providers and pharmacists. The Formulary is a continually reviewed and revised list of drug products, which mirror the prevailing clinical opinion within the medical community. Unfortunately, this dynamic process does not allow this document to be completely accurate at all times. To accommodate the necessary changes of this document, updates are to be sent to providers regularly. As you use this Formulary, you are encouraged to review the information and provide your input and comments to the CHG P&T Committee. The CHG P&T Committee uses the following criterion in the evaluation of product selection for the CHG Healthy Families Drug Formulary: The drug product must demonstrate unequivocal safety for medical use. The drug product must be efficacious and be medically necessary for the treatment, maintenance or prophylaxis of the medical condition. The drug product must demonstrate a therapeutic outcome. The drug product must be accepted for use by the medical community. The drug product must have an equitable cost ratio for the treatment of the medical condition and protonix.

The time course in sequential studies distinguishes AR from ATN N typically causes glomerular filtration rate to fall more than ERPF, with a fall in filtration fraction and in urine flow. When tubular tracers such as OIH or MAG3 are used, tracer uptake is preserved but urine flow and tracer washout are impaired, leading to abnormal parenchymal retention that is easily recognized on gamma-camera images. Although our diagnostic criteria have remained essen tially the same since 1975, there have been 2 major changes in technique: replacement of OIH by MAG3 and replace ment or supplementation of the El by R20: 3. After develop ing methods of measurement for MAG3 and showing that they correlated closely with the corresponding measure ments for OIH 5 ; , we changed from OIH to MAG3 in 1991. Shortly thereafter, in 1993, the parameter R20: 3 was intro duced as an alternate measure of retention that, unlike El, required no urine collection or wet laboratory procedures 12 ; . The nuclear medicine findings in this study that are predictive of poor graft survival correspond to longstanding criteria for the renographic diagnosis of ATN 1, 12 ; . Current clinical data indicate that delayed allograft function is highly correlated with adverse outcomes in renal transplantation. Thus, the reason these findings predict graft survival may be their reliability as an early quantitative index of ATN. Because ATN is an infrequent complication of LRD trans plantation, this relationship may also explain why the association between ERPF, ATN, and outcome was found only for recipients of CD grafts. Alternatively, baseline ERPF may also be a proxy for functioning renal mass, another important variable influencinggraft survival. Remain ing to be clarified by further study are the extent to which these findings can be integrated with other predictors of graft survival, associated with specific immunosuppressive regi mens and used in selecting appropriate therapy, for example, modhretic drug.
